Dr Jonathan Swarbrick, lecturer in the University of St Andrews Business School’s Department of Economics, has written in The Scotsman on the risks of an AI-driven market correction and what Scotland should do now to prepare. He sets out the warning signs of a bubble, from stretched valuations, heavy market concentration, and circular investment to rising leverage, and argues that optimism will ebb, bringing a sharp correction in its wake.

Looking ahead, Dr Swarbrick urges Scotland to prioritise durable capacity over hype. He calls for investment in data infrastructure, connectivity and renewable energy, alongside broad digital literacy and mid-career reskilling, noting that a shallow venture pool and a lack of anchor firms leave smaller ecosystems exposed when global capital tightens. The goal, he writes, is to ensure firms, workers and institutions are ready to adopt AI productively when the cycle turns.
