Professor Philip Roscoe speaks on ABC’s Big Ideas

Professor Philip Roscoe, from the University of St Andrews Business School’s Department of Management, has featured on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Radio National’s thought-provoking radio series, Big Ideas. Recorded at the Australian National University and originally broadcast in October, his lecture draws on his recent book How to Build a Stock Exchange: The Past, Present and Future of Finance to trace the remarkable history of the London Stock Exchange from its origins in the transatlantic slave trade to today’s missions to Mars.
In the lecture, Professor Roscoe explores how financial markets have always been more than mechanisms for generating wealth. They are powerful social institutions capable of shaping governments, economies and societies, for better and for worse. His analysis shows how the evolution of finance reflects broader shifts in politics, technology and human ambition.
