St Andrews expert on benefit fraud crackdown

Dr Sapnoti Eswar, Senior Lecturer in the University of St Andrews Business School’s Department of Finance, has offered expert insight on the UK Government’s upcoming plans to tighten rules around benefit fraud.
In coverage by The National, Dr Eswar reflected on the financial pressures facing Chancellor Rachel Reeves ahead of the Autumn Statement, and why a crackdown on fraud is likely to appeal to investors.
She explained that the government currently faces a narrow set of options. From a financial market perspective, any policy measures must avoid raising inflation, minimise spending increases, and signal fiscal responsibility to bond investors. With the government under scrutiny, Dr Eswar said the planned approach appears designed to meet these constraints.
